Cleaning Your Granite Countertop

To ensure that your gorgeous granite cabinets stay sparkling for a long time, it’s important to clean them on a regular basis. You should always try your best to wipe up spills and debris as soon as it’s spilled to ensure your countertops stay in good condition.

Properly Sealed Granite

Before you begin to clean your granite you should check to see if it is properly sealed or not. You can easily test this by pouring a little water on the countertop. If the water stays on the surface after several minutes and begins to bead, then your countertops are properly sealed and ready to be cleaned. If the granite is starting to absorb the water then it is time to have your countertops properly sealed again. One of our team members at Custom Granite and Marble would be more than happy to assist you in this process.

What Should I Use to Clean My Granite Countertops?

Your granite countertops are beautiful and that is exactly how they should stay. The cleaning process for granite is simple and only requires a few things that you can find in your home or at your local department store.

  • Warm water
  • Gentle dish soap
  • Clean white dishcloth
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Spray bottle

How to Clean Granite Countertops

Step One: In a sink or bucket, mix warm water with a gentle dish soap. Wet and lather your clean white dish cloth and wring out until damp.

Step Two: Wipe down all of your countertops with your damp cloth. Make sure to move all appliances to ensure that the entire surface is cleaned equally. Gather all crumbs and dirt and make note of any problem areas that require further cleaning.

Step Three: Use your microfiber cloth to dry and buff your granite countertops. Giving your countertops a good buff will make them shine and avoid any streaking.

Step Four: To further disinfect your granite countertops you can use a homemade solution consisting of 50:50 water and isopropyl alcohol. Mix the proper amount of ingredients into a spray bottle for disinfecting. Spray the solution onto your countertops and leave it to work its magic for several minutes. Then you can wipe and buff the granite using a clean and dry microfiber cloth.

When you’re cleaning granite countertops there are a few products that have the ability to really harm the stone. You should always avoid using ammonia, vinegar and/or lemon-based cleaners. These products contain a high amount of acidity that could harm your countertops.

Why is Granite Maintenance Important?

Properly maintaining your granite countertops is important to maximize its lifetime in your home. Even though granite is extremely durable and considered to be one of the best stones for your countertops because of scratch and wear resistance, it’s still very important to take good care of it. Without proper care the granite can stain, scratch, chip or become dingy and in need of restoration after a period of time.
